Honoring your mom, or the moms, in your life may seem like an overwhelming challenge, but the last thing Mother’s Day should be is stressful. The key is to focus on just one or two special elements so that you can keep the spotlight on these special ladies.
A Special Outing
A trip to the movies, bowling alley, hiking trail, zoo or other fun activity is an excursion that doesn’t require extensive planning. When younger kids are in the mix, keeping their limitations in mind will ultimately make the celebration less stressful for mom, so going for a crowd-pleaser is always a good idea.
If the outing doesn’t have to be kid-friendly, an evening at the theater or art show opening can give your mother the sophisticated experience her daily life may lack. If you’re planning a mother-daughter outing, a day of pampering at the spa, or a session at the mani-pedi salon, is often just the ticket.
Say it with Flowers, Herbs and Shrubs
If the mom in your life is a gardener, surprise her with that special flowering vine she’s been talking about, or a basket full of seed packets and gardening supplies. Even better, take her on a “shopping spree” at the local nursery.
If you really want to treat mom, don’t just furnish the botanicals -- supply the manpower too! Help mom plant those new seedlings, or weed the patch where she wants to make a new garden bed. Once established, the new plants will be a lasting tribute.
Make it Multi-Mom!
One of the best ways to honor the importance of the mothers in your family is to invite everyone over -- grandmothers, aunts, moms, godmothers and sisters, as well as their loved ones.
These laid-back family get-togethers almost always involve reminiscing. But to encourage the memories, starting a storytelling circle is an excellent way to open up the floodgates. Ask everyone to share a special memory of their mothers or about what motherhood means to them. And if your guests feel comfortable with it, make sure to film some of those special moments so you can always treasure them.
With a group that’s likely to involve all ages, keep the celebration laid-back, with a backyard picnic or simple indoor buffet. Remember, making sure the moms in the group don’t have to cook or clean is essential!
