As our children get older and begin to be invited to more parties, you will find that not all parties are kosher. You may keep kosher in your home, but other Jewish families may not and some of your child’s friends will not come from Jewish homes where kosher is served.
You want your child to be able to attend parties with the rest of his or her friends, but what is the best way to handle this situation so that your child stays true even when they go where non-kosher food and cake is served? We have some ideas!
Talk to the Hosts
If you want your children to stay true to their commitment to the Torah and keep kosher, they need to know what to do in these circumstances. You may be able to take action prior to the party by communicating with the parent of your child’s friend. If the parents of your child’s friends are not aware that you keep kosher, let them know.
Many parents are accustomed to making menu changes due to dietary needs of their children’s friends. It is common to see vegetarian and vegan items at parties, even those for 8 to 14-year-olds, so letting them know will make them aware.
Offer to Make Something for the Party
You could always offer to bring a kosher item because, chances are, your child will not be the only one there who keeps kosher. You can make something yourself to send with your child, order a kosher dessert or kid fun food from PaNosh Kosher Catering, or suggest this to the parent who is hosting the party. Often those who do not keep kosher don’t understand the practice or food required but are more than willing to accommodate their guests.
Have Something Ready at Home
If your children find that there is very little for them to eat while attending the party, due to little or no kosher food being served, you can offer to have something special for them when they get home. This can be a special dessert or a meal out at a kosher restaurant.
Plan Ahead for Your Attendance
Keeping kosher and offering items to kids that they will eat can be a challenge whether you child is attending a party or you are hosting one. Kids in the 8 to 14-year-old range can be finicky, but there are items that they will eat.
At PaNosh Kosher Catering, we understand the need to offer kosher items fit for the younger crowd. We have a youth menu with items that are familiar to the younger crowd, are kosher and will please even those who aren’t. Contact us soon and we can help you keep your next party kosher.
